What is a Router?
Router Write For Us: A router is a device that connects two or more packet-switched networks or subnets. Besides, It has two main functions: managing traffic between these networks by forwarding data packets to their intended IP addresses and allowing multiple devices to use the same Internet connection.
And also, a LAN is a group of connected devices restricted to a specific geographic area. Further, there are several routers, but most pass data between LANs (local area networks) and WANs (wide area networks). So, A local area network usually requires only one router.
On the other hand, a WAN is a large network spread over a wide geographical area. So, Large organizations and businesses that operate in multiple locations across the country, for example, will need separate LANs for each location, which is then connected to the other LANs to form a WAN. Because a WAN is spread over a large area, it often requires multiple routers and switches*.
Different Types of Routers
For connecting LAN to the Internet, a router must first communicate with a modem. Besides, there are two main ways to do this:
Wireless Router – A wireless router uses an Ethernet cable to connect to a modem. In addition, It distributes data by converting binary code packets into radio signals and transmitting them wirelessly using antennas. So, Wireless routers do not establish a LAN; instead, they create WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks), which connect multiple devices using wireless communication.
Wired Router – Like a wireless router, a wired router also uses an Ethernet cable to connect to a modem. It then uses separate cables to connect to one or more devices on the network, creating a local network and connecting the devices on that network to the Internet.
Central Router – Unlike routers used in a home or small business LAN, large corporations and businesses that transmit large data packets within their network use a central router. So, Core routers operate at the “heart” of a network and do not communicate with outside networks.
Perimeter Router – While a core router exclusively handles data traffic within a large-scale network, a perimeter router communicates with both core routers and external networks.
So, Border routers live at the “edge” of a network and use BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) to send and receive data from other LANs and WANs.
Virtual Router – A virtual router is a software application that performs the same function as a standard hardware router. And also, In case one fails, you can use Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) to establish primary and backup virtual routers.
